Managing research data at the end of the project

At the end of your research project, it’s important to take active decisions on what you do with the research data after the project is done. For instance how you preserve your data or how you share your data with other interested researchers.

Offboarding

When the research project is in it's final phase and the data is in the final version, you need to start thinking about how you handle the project data after the project ends as well as offboard the systems you have used to manage the data in.

Publication of data

Research data have the potential to be reused in many ways.

The core aspect of working with the FAIR Principles is the increased attention on data getting published, shared, discovered and reused - enabling both yourself and others to get the most value of the data.

Benefits of data publication

  • Career benefits: Data publication may lead to increased visibility, reuse and citation and thereby recognition of your research. It can facilitate new collaborations and lead to new discoveries, enhancing the scientific field and creating more citations for the original data creators.
  • Scientific progress: Publishing your research data has direct benefits by making the research area more robust, facilitating new collaborations, new data use and establishing links to other research areas and researchers.
  • Public Good: Your research is already a benefit to science and the wider public, and by publishing research data it serves as inspiration and a steppingstone for further development of new treatments, technologies, and inventions.

Long term preservation

If you are done working on your data and wish to store the data more permanently, you should have a look at AAU's storage system DataDeposit
