FAIR
Why care about FAIR?
Getting started with FAIR
FAIR is a continuum – meaning you are not either FAIR or not FAIR. For example, The European Commission have high ambitions about Open Science and FAIR but they do understand that not all data can be shared. In the FAIR world, a phrase describing this is, “make data as open as possible and as closed as necessary”.
An easy way to to start working with the FAIR principles could be to:
- 1
Make metadata descriptions. Standardized metadata enhances the Findability, Interoperability, and Reusability of your data.
- 2
Store your data in a repository thereby getting a DOI and a framework for metadata. The visibility of metadata alone can be FAIR enough if your data cannot be shared.
- 3
Put a data license on your data. This will describe how others may handle the data.
