All researchers at academic and research institutions, public sector organisations, industrial, small, and medium enterprises in the EU can apply for access in the form of a grant.

Unfortunately not. LUMI has plans to offer this, but they are not ready yet. There are, however, smaller-scale facilities within DeiC that are suitable for confidential or sensitive data.

First of all, you need to have successfully applied for a grant. Once this is in place, you will receive specific instructions on how to use the facility you were granted access to. Access methods may differ between the individual facilities.

The supercomputers typically provide ways of sharing files etc. among users within a project.

Possibilities may differ among the individual supercomputers. A minimum requirement is that the software can run under Linux, since the operating system on the supercomputers is generally some variant of Linux. In many cases, it is necessary to encapsulate the software in a container in order to use it.

Possibilities may differ among the individual supercomputers. At least some of the supercomputers have a part of the supercomputer designed for working interactively with applications with a graphical user interface. However, the bulk of work carried out on a supercomputer consists of “number-crunching” which you initiate from a command line interface through your own computer and come back later to download or further process/analyse the results when the job is done.

You can get up to 100 mio. CPU core-hours. First of all, you must have a need for at least 4.7 mio. CPU core-hours or 0.5 mio. CPU core-hours used together with GPUs. This is a lot; the former corresponds to using a million typical office laptops simultaneously for about an hour!

If the research you need to do (or dream of doing) is too much for an ordinary PC, you may need a supercomputer. At least you need a bigger computer – see the range of options you can get access to.
