When preparing to publish, it is important to ensure that your publication choices align with your overall publication strategy, including output type, journal or publisher, and target audiences. This helps you select appropriate publication channels and supports the effective dissemination of your research. In addition, you must ensure that your publication choices support compliance with Open Access requirements. AAU encourages Open Access publishing, and you are required to upload an Accepted Author Manuscript in VBN if the final published version is not openly available.

At AAU, it is mandatory to register publications in VBN. To increase the visibility of your research and present the full range of your work, you are encouraged to register all relevant activities, including projects, collaborations, conferences, and other contributions.

You should review how your research registrations contribute to institutional indicators such as the AAU Research & Innovation Indicator. Ensuring that your data is complete and accurate helps reflect your research output and impact correctly in institutional reporting and evaluations.

You may also consider how your research is reflected through different types of impact, including traditional metrics (such as citations), alternative metrics (such as usage and online attention), and societal impact. Being aware of these perspectives can support your understanding of how your research contributes both within academia and beyond.

Check if there are elements in what you are about to publish (text, pictures/illustrations, audio etc.) that require permission from the copyright holder.

If use of e.g. a picture requires permission, then you must either obtain permission or NOT use the picture.

When your research data is finalised, assess whether and how it can be published or shared. Consider whether the data can be made openly available or whether access needs to be restricted, for example due to sensitive or confidential information.

If you publish your data in a repository, make sure the data is sufficiently documented with relevant metadata and follow the repository requirements regarding licensing and other information.

At AAU, it is mandatory to create a Data Management Plan (DMP) for your research project. Your DMP is a living document and should be kept up to date throughout your research so that it continues to reflect how your research data is handled.

You should review your DMP when significant changes occur. This may, for example, include changes to the types of data you collect or generate, how data is documented or organised, where data is stored or processed, who has access to it, or how data will be shared, published, archived or preserved.

It is also a good idea to review your DMP at key points in your research, for example when new data is collected, when your research enters a new phase, or before data is shared, published or preserved.
